SEL Through Hip-Hop
A culturally responsive Social Emotional Learning curriculum that uses hip-hop culture — its stories, values, and creative practices — to teach the skills that transform lives: emotional intelligence, self-awareness, communication, leadership, and conflict resolution.
Five pillars. One journey.
Each lesson weaves these five SEL competencies through hip-hop stories, creative exercises, and collaborative practice.
Emotional Intelligence
Students learn to recognize, name, and regulate emotions using hip-hop lyrics and culture as mirrors for their own experiences.
Self-Awareness
Through writing, reflection, and creative expression, youth explore identity, values, and personal narrative.
Communication
Lyric analysis, cypher circles, and collaborative projects build active listening, empathy, and clear expression.
Leadership
Peer facilitation, mentorship roles, and showcase preparation develop confidence and servant leadership.
Conflict Resolution
Using real hip-hop stories of overcoming adversity, students practice de-escalation, mediation, and restorative practices.
